What is piles?

Piles

Anal piles, also known as hemorrhoids, are swollen veins in the anus and rectum. They are very common, affecting many people at some point in their lives.

Piles or ‘Hemorrhoids’ are blood vessels within the walls of rectum and anal canal. Piles occurs when these blood vessels swell and the tissue above them gets stretched as a result. This process creates a sac-like structure which gets further strained during our bowel movement, thereby causing pain and discomfort.

Symptoms

There are four grades of piles – hemorrhoids

Grade I: These are very small lumps inside the anus.

Grade II: Piles may bleed slightly. The lumps gradually grow larger.

Grade III: The piles protrude out and there may be a lot of bleeding.

Grade IV: Piles protrude out of the anus and have to be pushed back in with the hands.
